KILOMETER AND MILE RECORDS are considered equal distances for the purpose of establishing World Water Speed Records. All Jet-Speed Records, were set on a kilometer course. Malcolm Campbell and Art Asbury's records are likewise. OROVILLE, Calif., March 13, 2004 -- Dave Villwock and the Miss Budweiser team shattered the World Water Speed Record by 14.999mph, for a propeller driven boat, on Thermalito Afterbay, setting a new world record of 220.493mph. Thus, usurping the mile record of Russ Wicks, set June 15,2000. The team made history just shortly after 8:30 a.m. PT, as Villwock piloted the Miss Budweiser on the first leg of the run to an average speed of 213.437mph, and to an average speed of 227.550 mph on the return leg, resulting in the new world water speed record of 220.493 mph, for propeller driven boats. Villwock peaked the Miss Budweiser on the return leg at a top speed of 229mph before the boat's rudder and propeller failed, leaving the Miss Budweiser damaged and dead in the water. Villwock was uninjured. The propeller was recently recovered and found to have a missing blade. Failure of the prop, likely set up vibration which took out the shaft and rudder.
